Michael is a technology executive who has founded, led, and sold companies at the intersection of commerce and cloud. His expertise spans omni-channel architecture, product management, and payment systems. He founded MerchantOps to fix the product data problem that has quietly undermined commerce operations for decades.

Rob Kulis
Chief Commercial Officer & Co-Founder
Rob brings 25 years of enterprise commercial leadership across GE Healthcare, Cardinal Health, and PwC. He founded and exited MEI Informatics, running precision data campaigns across 40+ healthcare accounts. At MerchantOps, he leads go-to-market, vertical strategy, and demand generation.

From the trenches of ecommerce
MerchantOps was started by Michael von Bodungen, a longtime industry veteran of the ecommerce world. Michael started his career helping found a systems integrator, CrossView, during the late 90s that focused on building ecommerce websites for large retailers, distributors, brands, and global companies doing commerce at scale.
Michael was CEO of CrossView in 2015 when the 250-person company was acquired by PFSweb. After staying on at PFSweb for four years after the acquisition, Michael departed for VTEX, an ecommerce software provider from Brazil that was looking to expand in the United States.
Having spent almost 25 years in ecommerce and having built many strong relationships with executive leaders at retailers, distributors, and global brands, Michael started to think about all the things he wanted to address to help people run a more successful operation.
With the dawn of AI, the advent of coding agents, and his new buddy Claude, Michael embarked on the first step of the journey to build an agent and system that focuses on product enrichment — helping companies take the myriad of data provided by brands in PDFs and spreadsheets, ingest that data, standardize it, and enrich it so it can be published faster — with the structured data that AI agents can find, read, and surface accurately.
Product enrichment is just the start. The goal is to build an agent for every role in the commerce operation — merchandising, promotions, email, social, inventory, pricing, and overall profitability of operations.

MerchantOps was born from decades of experience in the trenches of ecommerce. Our founder, Michael von Bodungen, co-founded CrossView in the late 90s—a systems integrator that built ecommerce platforms for large retailers and global brands. As CEO, he grew the company to 250 people before its acquisition by PFSweb in 2015.
After four years at PFSweb and a stint at VTEX helping the Brazilian ecommerce platform expand in the US, Michael had seen enough. He'd watched countless retailers struggle with the same operational challenges year after year.
With the emergence of AI and coding agents, the opportunity became clear. Armed with Claude as a coding partner and a deep understanding of retail operations, Michael set out to build what he wished had existed for the past 25 years: intelligent agents that actually understand commerce operations and can do the work.
